Dreaming of lice has no single traditional meaning. Recorded folk beliefs assign sharply different omens to the same dream, ranging from coming wealth and escape from enemies to illness, hostility, or death. In some older dream books, the action taken against the lice changes the interpretation as much as their presence.
One Dream, Several Recorded Omens
A useful record of the superstition appears in Fanny D. Bergen’s 1896 collection Current Superstitions: Collected from the Oral Tradition of English Speaking Folk. Its dream section preserves several separate beliefs about lice rather than presenting one standard interpretation.
Recorded Meanings
- In one Newfoundland record, dreaming of lice was treated as an omen of death.
- Another Newfoundland record interpreted the same dream as a sign of enemies.
- An Alabama belief gave the opposite reading: lice in a dream meant “coming wealth.”
- An Ohio record associated the dream with sickness in the family.
These entries were collected as separate items of oral folklore. They show why “lice dream superstition” cannot accurately be reduced to a universal prediction. Even within one nineteenth-century collection, the interpretations range from fortunate to threatening.
Why Lice Could Be a Money Omen
The wealth interpretation was not limited to the Alabama record. Older popular dream books also connected lice with money under certain circumstances.
The Witches’ Dream Book and Fortune Teller, published in New York in 1885, treated being covered with lice while killing large numbers of them as a favorable omen. The entry predicted riches and also linked the act with deliverance from enemies, slander, and malice.
This creates an important distinction in the folklore. Simply seeing lice could carry an unfavorable meaning in one tradition, while actively destroying them could represent a favorable reversal in another. The surviving records therefore support several related beliefs rather than the modern idea that every lice dream has one fixed symbolic meaning.
Removing the Lice Could Reverse the Omen
The importance of getting rid of the insects appears in an earlier popular dream manual as well. Goode’s New Dream Book, published in the nineteenth century, discussed being covered with vermin such as lice. Its interpretation depended on what happened next.
Lice Remain
The dream was associated with prolonged sickness.
Lice Are Cast Off
The dreamer was said to be delivered from troubles.
The pattern resembles the later dream-book interpretation in which killing lice leads to a favorable outcome. In these texts, removal or destruction changes the omen: the troublesome creature is present, but overcoming it becomes part of the prediction.
Lice as an Enemy Omen
Enemies form another recurring strand of the tradition. The 1896 oral-folklore collection contains a direct belief that dreaming of lice means enemies. The 1885 dream book develops a related idea by saying that killing the lice foretells deliverance from enemies and victory over malicious talk.
These records should not be merged into a single rule. One concerns merely dreaming of lice; the other concerns successfully killing them. Still, together they show that hostility and overcoming hostility belonged to the documented range of meanings attached to this dream image.
The Darker Readings: Illness and Death
Some recorded versions are much less favorable. Bergen’s collection preserves a belief from New Harbor, Newfoundland, in which dreaming of lice foretold death, while an Ohio entry associated the dream with sickness in the family.
The older dream-book tradition also sometimes linked remaining covered in lice with illness. Such statements belong to historical systems of dream divination. They record what particular communities or popular manuals said a dream foretold; they are not evidence that a dream predicts an actual illness or death.
What Details Matter in the Traditional Reading?
The historical material suggests that the bare presence of lice was not always enough to determine the omen. What happened to the lice could alter the interpretation.
- Simply dreaming of lice: recorded meanings include wealth, enemies, illness, and death.
- Killing many lice: an 1885 dream book associates this with riches and overcoming enemies or malicious talk.
- Remaining covered with lice: an older dream-book entry associates this condition with sickness.
- Casting the lice off: the same tradition changes the reading to deliverance from troubles.
For folklore purposes, a lice dream is therefore best understood as a variable omen tradition. Its meaning depends on the specific recorded belief and, in some versions, on whether the dreamer remains infested or succeeds in removing the lice.
